To this day, I still get a lot of people asking if we will ever see Disney attempt to revisit the now canceled Lizzie McGuire reboot that was in the works for Disney+. Sadly, that won’t be happening however you can now get a taste of the series was going to be.
The entire script for the first episode has finally surfaced on Archive.org. It should be noted that the script did not surface from Disney, but an anonymous user posted to EBay. Interestingly enough, the title of the what have been more mature reboot was titled Elizabeth McGuire.
Announced in 2019 with Hilary Duff leading the way, the new series was intended to reflect Lizzie as a 30-year-old navigating adulthood in New York City, continuing the original’s blend of humor and heart.
Filming began in late 2019, but the production faced challenges, particularly regarding the show’s tone. The creators wanted to address more mature themes, aligning with Lizzie’s growth, while Disney+ aimed for a family-friendly approach. In early 2020, the show’s creator, Terri Minsky, was removed from the project due to these creative differences. Hilary Duff expressed her disappointment, emphasizing the importance of staying true to the character’s evolution.
In early 2021, Disney officially announced that the reboot would not move forward, citing the inability to find a satisfactory direction for the series that matched the original’s spirit while addressing the new themes.
