Disney is officially moving forward with Princess Diaries 3. According to Deadline, Raya and the Last Dragon writer Adele Lim has been tapped to direct.
Lim shared her excitement, telling the trade, “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
As of now, franchise stars Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews are not officially signed on to the project and it isn’t known if she will. However, she has expressed interest in returning to the character of Mia Thermopolis over the years, as has co-star Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi.
Plot details haven’t been confirmed, but the threequel is expected to continue the story in the first two Princess Diaries films rather than rebooting the series. A few years back talks of a Disney+ spinoff were planned and centered around Mia’s half-sister. It is unknown if this new film will pull from the now-canceled spinoff.
Aadrita Mukerji (Reacher, Supergirl) wrote the first draft of the script last year. Debra Martin Chase is producing Princess Diaries 3. EPs include Lim’s producing partner Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack. Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.
As for Lim, she is also known for writing Crazy Rich Asians, the first film by a major Hollywood studio to feature a majority cast of Asian descent in a modern setting since The Joy Luck Club in 1993. She also directed and produced the 2023 breakout comedy Joy Ride.
