Courtney B. Vance has joined the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians as the second season is currently filming.
According to Variety, Vance will play the role of Zeus, who was played by Lance Reddick in season one. Sadly, Reddick passed away at the age of 60 shortly after season one wrapped.
“I can’t tell you how excited I am to join the extraordinary cast of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians!’” Vance said in a statement. “There are few moments in an actor’s career when you can honestly say that you’re about to board a series that has such a devoted fan base filled with characters beloved around the world and is based on a wildly successful book series. I know that stepping into this role of Zeus will be a memorable experience and I’ll be giving my brother, Lance Reddick, who left us way too soon, a heavenly hug.”
Season 2 of Percy Jackson will follow the events of The Sea of Monsters, the second book in Rick Riordan’s series. According to the official synopsis, Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood a year later only to find chaos awaiting him. His bond with Annabeth begins to shift, he discovers he has a Cyclops half-brother, Grover has disappeared, and the camp is under attack by Kronos’ forces. To restore order, Percy embarks on a dangerous journey into the Sea of Monsters, uncovering a hidden destiny tied to his identity as Poseidon’s son.
The new season will feature Vance and Smart, alongside new cast members Andra Day as Athena, Daniel Diemer as Tyson, and Timothy Simons as Tantalus.
