‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’ Sequel a Go at 20th Century Studios

20th Century Studios is fast tracking a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are in talk to reprise their roles and serve as executive producers. Tim Federle (Better Nate Than Ever) is on board to direct.

Robin Schiff, who wrote the original and is known for showrunning the Neflix hit Emily in Paris, returned to pen the sequel. Laurence Mark, the veteran producer who produced the original, is also back in same role. Barry Kemp, the creator of 1980s series Newhart, is also producing.

Released in 1997, the story revolves around two inseparable best friends, Romy White (Sorvino) and Michele Weinberger (Lisa Kudrow), who decide to attend their ten-year high school reunion. They feel insecure about their lives and concoct an elaborate lie about their success to impress their former classmates.

At the box office, the film grossed approximately $29 million against a budget of around $20 million. While it wasn’t a massive blockbuster, its charm and relatable themes contributed to its lasting popularity in pop culture, leading to numerous quotes and references in various media.
