Disney is updating content warnings on several classic films, including Peter Pan and Dumbo, as part of a broader shift in its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) strategy following Donald Trump’s return to office.
According to reports from Axios, the company is revising the disclaimers that play before these titles. The original warning stated that the films “include negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures.” The revised version now says: “This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions.”
Disney first introduced content warnings in November 2019 for movies like Dumbo due to depictions considered racist in films from the 1940s and 1950s. At that time, the warning noted: “This program is presented as originally created. It may contain outdated cultural depictions.”
Disney’s chief human resources officer Sonia Coleman outlined changes to the company’s DEI efforts in a memo to leadership Tuesday.
“Creating a welcoming and respectful environment for our employees and guests is core to our company culture and our business,” Coleman wrote. “Our values — integrity, creativity, collaboration, community, inclusion — guide our actions and how we treat each other. Today I want to provide an update on how our values are embedded in our leader compensation programs, specifically our Other Performance Factors (OPFs), as well as share some of the work that has been underway to evolve our talent strategy consistent with these values.”
