Sometimes even the trades get the Disney news wrong.
Back in 2023, it was reported that actress-turned-director (Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, Women Talking) was in talks to direct Disney’s long in development live-action remake of Bambi. Despite further reports from trades that she exited the project, Polley recently revealed she never even signed on to the project.
Polley revealed the update to Vanity Fair saying, “I was never actually officially attached to it. I had one or two conversations about it, but there was no deal, I’d never signed on to it, so it was more of an internet phenomenon than a real thing. I did talk to them, but I was just working on a bunch of other things that I ended up being more focused on. I do think it’s a super-interesting thing to remake that movie, actually. I was also really interested in the mother-dying-young aspect of it. I could have delivered something very bleak.”
Disney’s has always said that the Bambi remake would be viewed as a companion piece to films like The Jungle Book and The Lion King and is expected to use the same technology. Disney is cognizant that Bambi is less epic in scope and story and is not aiming to shoehorn a larger narrative onto the classic tale.
While we wait for updated news on Bambi Disney has other live-action remakes in various stages of development including Tangled, Aristocats, Hercules (Hades), and Princess and the Frog.
