Since 2018, the Winnie the Pooh franchise has been defunct at Walt Disney Studios. It’s last official project involving the characters being the live-action Christopher Robin.
While the characters have since been revived and remixed for the horror genre, a new rumor suggests that Disney may be quietly planning a comeback for the crew from the Hundred Acre Woods.
According to Daniel RPK, the Walt Disney Company is indeed developing a new Winnie the Pooh project. While plot details are scarce, it’s expected to see the character (and his friends) return back to their animated roots.
Now, because this has yet to be revealed by the Walt Disney Company or reported on by any of the major trades, we urge our readers to take this news with a grain of salt. Considering RPK’s track record however, we are inclined to believe there is some truth to it.
Winnie the Pooh was first created by A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard in the 1920s. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Disney gained exclusive access to use the characters and subsequently created numerous projects with them at the center.
Because copyright law dictates that any character or story can become public domain after either 95 years from when the original story was published or 120 years after creation (whichever comes first), he and other public domain characters have since become horror icons.
