Seven figures. That’s how much Walt Disney Studios has spent to acquire the rights to the fantasy series Impossible Creatures.
Written by acclaimed Katherine Rundell, the series takes place in the fictional Gilmouria Archipelago. It revolves around a human boy who stumbles into the hidden entrance to the magical world while spending the holiday with his grandfather in Scotland. After meeting Mal, a girl from this mysterious world, the two form an unlikely friendship as they attempt to save the creatures that are in danger of becoming extinct because the force that keeps them alive and vibrant is dying out.
Rundell seems to have been included with the deal as she will adapt the first two books of the series, titled Impossible Creatures and The Poisoned King, into screenplays. She also now has a first look deal with the studio that includes all of her current and upcoming lit properties. What she originally planned as a trilogy has now become a five-novel saga, with plans to broaden the franchise with spinoffs and prequel books.
If her success seems reminiscent of fellow U.K. author J.K. Rowling, that’s not where the similarities end. Rundell just became the first U.K. children’s author since the Harry Potter author to simultaneously reach the No. 1 position on the children’s book charts in both the U.K. and the U.S.
