‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ News and Updates

It’s been almost 10 years since Disney has released a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie and while there have been major updates, earlier this week some news sent the internet ablaze.

According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Disney has tapped 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns to pen the script for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. The new installment in the multibillion dollar franchise will reportedly focus on Captain Jack Sparrow’s son.

Should be noted, at this time Johnny Depp has yet to sign on to the project but the hope is for him to return in a minor/cameo role.

An interesting piece to Sneider’s report is that Margot Robbie is expected to be the co-lead alongside the Sparrow’s son. An actor has yet to be cast in the project.

What we know

While it has been confirmed in the past that Disney was developing multiple Pirates movies including one with Robbie considered a spinoff and the other being Pirates 6, which franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said was further along in development.

The report from Jeff Sneider came out a couple of days ago and let me be the first to tell you Sneider knows his stuff and his reporting is accurate regarding Pirates. So why am I writing this post out now? Well, I wanted to ask people I know if they had further info and they did.

According to my sources, Disney decided to cancel the multiple different Pirates movies and mesh the ideas into one movie being Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

I was also told Disney CEO Bob Iger had been getting a bit frustrated that the studio hadn’t been able to get a new movie out and that incoming CEO Josh D’Amaro will be working hard with newly appointed President and CCO Dana Walden to get the new movie fast-tracked.

The project still needs a director and there have been a few names that have been floated around for the job including Michael Bay and original trilogy director Gore Verbinski. While Disney has yet to speak with anyone just yet, I was told they were interested in some big names the “action genre” such as Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun Maverick, Tron: Legacy), Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys Ride or Die, Ms. Marvel), David Leitch (Bullet Train, Fall Guy), and while these are names I am sure the studio would like to meet with, at the end of the day, there could be completely different names that come up altogether.

Keep in mind, all this information I have shared is just what I am hearing, nothing is confirmed at this time and we likely won’t get any concrete news until Disney’s D23 Expo this Summer.
