Last year’s Lilo & Stitch was a box office smash, grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, so it is no surprise the studio was quick to greenlight a sequel. While this is good news for most fans, the sequel may be without the man who steered the ship.
According to reporting from TheWrap tied to early details about DreamWorks’ upcoming animated sequel The Wild Robot Escapes, filmmaker Chris Sanders could potentially take on directing duties for Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch 2, a project he is already involved with as a writer.
Sanders would be taking over directing duties from Dean Fleischer Camp, who was behind the camera for the first movie. As of now, it is unknown why Camp isn’t expected to return for the sequel.
Sanders is no stranger to the franchise. He was the co-creator, star, and director of the original 2002 animated feature film Lilo & Stitch alongside Dean DeBlois, and he has provided the voice of Stitch in most Western installments of the franchise, as well as the live-action adaptation. He also voiced 627 in Lilo & Stitch: The Series and Leroy in Leroy & Stitch.
The 2025 film starred Newcomer Maia Kealoha stars as Lilo Pelekai, Zach Galifianakis as the voice of Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Billy Magnussen as the voice of Agent Pleakley, Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena, Tia Carrere as Mrs. Kekoa, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Amy Hill as Tūtū, and Jason Scott Lee as a luau manager.
No word yet on any plot details; However, Kealoha, Agudong, Galifianakis, Magnussen, and Vance are all expected to return.
