Arnold Schwarzenegger may be teaming with Disney on a return to some of his most iconic 80s action movie roles.
While attending the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, over the weekend, Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke with TheArnoldFans, where the fan site gathered several updates about the action star’s potential future projects at 20th Century Studios.
Schwarzenegger revealed that he had been hearing great things surrounding Dan Tractenberg’s Predator movies (Prey, Predator: Badlands) and that a return is being talked about.
They did an additional Predator and the director (Dan Trachtenberg) has been doing a great job of that. Now, he wants me to be in the next Predator. We’ve talked about it. As a matter of fact, FOX studios has kind of rediscovered “Arnold”. They’ve come to me and said, ‘We want you to do Predator, we just got a script for you to do Commando 2’.”
His return should not be shocking in the slightest, as his character, Dutch, made a very brief cameo in Tractenberg’s Predator: Killer of Killers alongside Naru (Prey) and Mike Harrigan (Predator 2).
He also revealed to the site that a return as Conan the Barbarian is in the works and already has a writer/director attached.
“They just hired a fantastic writer/director who did Tom Cruise’s last four movies. They just hired him (Christopher McQuarrie) to write and direct King Conan.”
Released in 1982, the first Conan film, Conan The Barbarian earned Schwarzenegger worldwide recognition. The success of the first film spawned a sequel, titled Conan the Destroyer (1984), which opened to mixed reviews. After years if trying to get a third film made, the studio attempted a reboot in 2011 that starred Jason Momoa in the titular role, which would end up being a failure at the box office and amongst critics.
As for Commando (1985), the film was a commercial success at the box office, grossing $55+ million on a $10 million budget, and was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Special Effects, but lost to Back to the Future. Plans for a sequel were discussed over the years and never materialized.
