Eragon fans rejoice! The long-awaited return of the hit book series to the screen is finally in motion. According to Eragon author Christopher Paolini, has confirmed the series is in active development at Disney+.
Paolini confirmed reports from last month that Todd Harthan, showrunner of Disney+ series High Potential, and Todd Helbing (Superman & Lois) are on board to showrun the series. Additionally, he confirmed some new information. Kerry Williamson, who wrote the upcoming Highlander remake starring Henry Cavill, has joined the writing team.
Disney+, as a sibling network to 20th Television, which is producing Eragon under a deal with producer Bert Salke’s Co-Lab 21 banner, has Eragon in production under an option deal signed with 20th TV and producer Bert Salke in 2022 for the entire The Inheritance Cycle series of books.
The series is planned to tackle each book with each season. This is something Disney+ is doing with its Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, which is currently filming in Vancouver.
It is still early days in the writing process so no directors or cast have been discussed and likely won’t happen until later this year.
In 2006, 20th Century Fox released a big-screen feature starring Ed Speelers, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Guillory, Robert Carlyle, Djimon Hounsou, Garrett Hedlund, Joss Stone, John Malkovich, and Rachel Weisz. The film opened to less-than-stellar reviews and grossed only $100 million on a $250 million budget.
