Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, Coco 2, these are just a few of the hit franchises, returning to theaters from Pixar. Well today, we have learned there may be another coming.
In a report about Pixar Animation, The Wall Street Journal indicated that a third installment of the beloved Monsters, Inc. franchise is in the works.
The original Monsters, Inc., released in 2001, was both a critical and commercial success. Directed by Pete Docter, the film introduced audiences to a whimsical world where monsters generate power by scaring children. It received an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, praising its heartwarming story and stunning animation. The film grossed approximately $577 million worldwide.
The sequel, Monsters University (2013), acted as a prequel, exploring the college days of Sulley and Mike. While it didn’t reach the same heights as its predecessor, it still performed well at the box office, earning about $743 million globally. Critics gave it a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, highlighting its charm and humor, though some felt it lacked the emotional depth of the original.
In addition to the films, the franchise expanded into television with the series Monsters at Work, which premiered on Disney+ in 2021. The show picks up six months after the events of Monsters, Inc., focusing on the transition from scare power to laughter and joy. The first season received positive reviews, boasting a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans enjoying the return of beloved characters and the introduction of new ones. A second season was confirmed, further solidifying the franchise’s presence on streaming platforms.
Disney has not yet confirmed a release date or specific plot details. If true, the studio would announce it during their panel at Disney’s D23 expo. After a string of disappointments during the Covid era, Pixar is returning to what makes them successful so this news wouldn’t be shocking it true.
