Disney has officially launched ticket sales for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Moana, and to celebrate, the studio has released an all-new trailer offering fans a fresh look at the epic ocean adventure heading to theaters next month.
Set to premiere exclusively in theaters on July 10, the film stars newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, the fearless wayfinder chosen by the Ocean, alongside Dwayne Johnson, who returns to the role of the larger-than-life demigod Maui after first voicing the character in Disney’s beloved animated films.
In addition to the new footage, Disney has revealed another exciting casting announcement. Jemaine Clement will reprise his role as the flamboyant and treasure-loving giant crab Tamatoa, bringing back one of the most memorable villains from the original animated classic.
The cast also features an impressive lineup of Pacific Island talent, including Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, John Tui as Chief Tui, and Frankie Adams as Sina, Moana’s mother.
Disney’s live-action reimagining follows the same beloved story that captured audiences worldwide in 2016. When her island’s future is threatened, Moana sets sail beyond the reef on a daring voyage alongside Maui to restore balance and prosperity to her people. Along the way, she’ll face dangerous challenges, discover her true destiny, and learn what it means to become a master wayfinder.
The film is directed by Emmy and Tony Award-winning filmmaker Thomas Kail, best known for directing Hamilton. Producing the project are Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, while original Moana voice actress Auliʻi Cravalho serves as an executive producer.
Fans can also look forward to hearing many of the beloved songs that made the original film a global phenomenon. The live-action adaptation features music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, with Mancina also returning to compose the film’s score.
With tickets now on sale and anticipation continuing to build, Disney’s Moana is shaping up to be one of the summer’s biggest theatrical releases.
