Exciting news for all you Princess and the Frog fans out there.
A brand new live-action Disney movie that involves Disney Princess Tiana is in the works, according to Deadline.
The project will be co-written by Emmy winner and 2x Oscar nominated actor Colman Domingo and Tony nominee director Robert O’ Hara who are both in the talks.
It will be an original take on Princess Tiana based on her 2D animated feature film, Princess and the Frog. It is confirmed to be live-action spinoff than a full-on retelling of the animated film as Disney is currently doing with some of their animated studio features like the recent Moana that’s currently playing in theaters worldwide.
Princess and the Frog was one of Disney’s last hand drawn animated films, set in the 1920’s of New Orleans about a young waitress named Tiana, who dreams of opening her own restaurant, but encounters a Prince named Naveen who turned into a frog by an evil voodoo doctor named Facilier. Tiana is turned into a frog after trying to kiss the frog prince to help break the spell, so the two go on an adventure through the Louisiana bayou to seek help of a powerful voodoo priestess, Mama Odie.
The movie is based on both the 1812 Grimm fairy tale The Frog Prince and 2002 novel The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker along with real-life New Orleans chef, Leah Chase who was the inspiration of the character Tiana.
It’s been a very long time since Mouse House has done anything for Princess Tiana aside from getting her own theme park attraction ride at the parks, but Disney+ animated series was shelved but will get a shortform Disney+ special.
Disney’s current state of live-action adaptions is still breathing with Moana starring Dwayne Johnson currently playing in theaters despite being critically panned from critics and under performing at the box office opening weekend around $43 million domestically but a live-action Tangled directed by Michael Gracey is currently filming in Spain starring Kathryn Hahn, Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim and Diego Luna. A live-action Gaston spin-off from Beauty and the Beast is in development along with Stepsisters, a Cinderella spin-off being directed by Akiva Schaffer and a Lilo & Stitch 2 with Chris Sanders both writing and directing.
Domingo is on a hot-streak right now with two back-to-back Best Actor Oscar nominations from 2024’s Rustin and 2025’s Sing-Sing along with receiving double Emmy noms this year for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Netflix’s Four Seasons and Guest Actor in a Drama Series for HBO’s Euphoria which he won in 2022 for Euphoria. He will also guest host Jimmy Kimmel next week.
Domingo has a history of being a writer for writing the book of a play called Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, co-producing Fat Ham, a modern-take of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and was recently in starring in the Michael biopic as Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson’s father which grossed over a $1 billion at the box office and Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller, Disclosure Day.
O’Hara’s notable work includes 2011 horror thriller film, Inheritance, and play Insurrection: Holding History.
Since this is currently in development, we should hopefully get more news at D23 Expo next month along with a director and actors attached.
