Marvel Studios guards its secrets like Doctor Doom guards Latveria, but David Harbour may have just tossed one of the biggest Avengers: Doomsday revelations directly into the spotlight.
During a recent interview, Harbour was asked to deliver one line from the upcoming Avengers film completely out of context. The Red Guardian actor pointed and, using Alexei’s unmistakable Russian accent, declared:
“You… are Tony Stark.”

Excuse us, David. You are going to need to explain yourself.
Is Doctor Doom Really a Tony Stark Variant?
Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, but he won’t officially be playing Iron Man. Instead, Downey will step into the armor of Victor von Doom, one of the most legendary villains in Marvel history.
Ever since Marvel revealed that casting, fans have wondered whether Downey’s Doctor Doom would simply share Tony Stark’s face or whether the villain would somehow be a twisted multiversal version of the fallen Avenger.
Harbour’s suspiciously specific line may have given us the answer.
If Red Guardian delivers that line after Doom removes his mask, it could confirm that Earth’s heroes immediately recognize Victor as the man who sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos. That revelation would create one hell of an emotional problem for the Avengers: How do you fight the universe’s newest threat when he has the face of the man who once saved it?
Or Is Tony Stark Actually Returning?
There is another possibility—and it may be even bigger.
Harbour might not be speaking to Doctor Doom at all.
With Doomsday bringing together heroes from multiple realities, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men, the door is wide open for another version of Tony Stark to enter the fight. The original Earth-616 Tony died in Avengers: Endgame, but death has never stopped the multiverse from causing chaos.
Red Guardian could be meeting an alternate Tony Stark, or Downey’s Doom could be disguising himself as Tony to manipulate the Avengers. At this point, Marvel has enough universes in play to make almost anything possible.

David Harbour Could Be Messing With Everyone
Of course, there is also the most David Harbour explanation imaginable: He completely made it up.
The actor knows exactly how seriously Marvel fans analyze every word, facial expression, and suspicious pause. Dropping a line like this without context is the perfect way to light the internet on fire while technically revealing absolutely nothing.
But if it is a real line, Harbour may have casually spoiled the moment that explains why Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom looks exactly like Tony Stark.
Either way, Marvel fans now have another mystery to obsess over until Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18.
And somewhere inside Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige is probably taking David Harbour’s interview privileges away as we speak.
