North American Tour of ‘The Lion King’ To Close In 2027, With Reimagined Tour In The Works

After 25 years and over 10,000 performances during 291 engagements in 97 cities, the North American touring production of the Tony-winning Disney musical, The Lion King, which launched in 2002, will play its final performance on August 15, 2027. At the time of this announcement, the touring production has been seen by over 28 million theatregoers, making it both the longest-running and most-attended Broadway tour in North American history. After the show closes, Disney Theatrical Productions will begin work on a reimagined tour that will launch at a later time.

“For nearly a quarter century, this extraordinary tour has delivered the Broadway experience of The Lion King to millions of theatergoers throughout North America. This record-setting achievement is only possible due to the hundreds of theatre artists, onstage and off, who have brought every one of its more than 10,000 performances to brilliant life. We thank and salute them as we look ahead to the next chapter of The Lion King on tour,” say managing director Andrew Flatt and executive producer Anne Quart in a joint statement. “The touring landscape has changed considerably since this production first launched in 2002, and the time has come to build the show for the audiences of the future. This evolution will allow The Lion King to continue entertaining guests across North America for years. Touring is a vital part of our business, and we are committed to bringing Disney Theatrical productions to audiences in their hometowns for generations to come.”

Despite the tour closing, theatergoers will still be able to see the musical at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre in New York until the reimagined tour begins performances.
