Disney has landed one of the creative forces behind Stranger Things.
Shawn Levy and his production company, 21 Laps Entertainment, have signed a multiyear deal with Disney’s 20th Television. Beginning in October 2027, they’ll develop and produce new television series for Disney’s platforms and brands. For Levy, the move follows nearly a decade of working with Netflix.
Levy has been an executive producer on Stranger Things since its first season and has directed several episodes. His company has also worked on Netflix series including Shadow and Bone, All the Light We Cannot See and The Perfect Couple. That history makes this a substantial addition to Disney’s TV lineup, even though the deal has yet to produce an announced show.
Disney fans already know his work. Levy directed and co-wrote Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, and he’s directing Lucasfilm’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter. His Disney connection goes back further: early in his career, he directed episodes of Disney Channel’s The Famous Jett Jackson.
Levy described the move as a homecoming, saying Disney’s approach to storytelling has long felt familiar to him. He also made clear that his work on the Stranger Things universe will continue at Netflix. So no, this deal doesn’t mean Hawkins is moving to Disney+.
The big question now is what Levy and 21 Laps will make for Disney. They’ve shown they can deliver stories that draw huge audiences, and Disney is giving them room to create the next one. No projects have been announced under the new television deal yet, but this is a partnership worth watching.
