Hollywood Boulevard traded its usual red carpet for deep ocean blue as Whalefall surfaced for its world premiere. And with a giant sperm whale head waiting outside the El Capitan Theatre, this was one photo op with serious bite.
20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment celebrated the survival thriller with stars Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue and John Ortiz in attendance. Director Brian Duffield and author Daniel Kraus, who co-wrote the screenplay, also joined the festivities alongside producers Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum.

The premiere photos delivered plenty of personality, including Brolin posing beside the enormous whale’s open mouth and sharing a moment with Abrams. The blue carpet and ocean-inspired backdrop brought the movie’s underwater nightmare right onto Hollywood Boulevard.
One Hour of Oxygen. One Massive Problem.
Based on Kraus’ novel, Whalefall follows Jay Gardiner, played by Abrams, as he dives off California’s Central Coast in search of his late father’s remains. What begins as a deeply personal journey becomes a desperate fight for survival when a massive sperm whale swallows him.
Trapped inside the animal with just an hour of oxygen remaining, Jay must draw on the difficult lessons his father taught him to find a way out. Brolin plays his father, putting their relationship at the heart of a premise that is already enough to make your next ocean swim feel a little less relaxing.
That emotional thread gives Whalefall more to work with than its jaw-dropping setup alone. Jay is facing grief, memories of his father and an oxygen supply that will not wait for him to sort either one out.
A Big Screen Dive Into the Deep
Duffield directs from a screenplay he wrote with Kraus. The cast also includes Jane Levy and Emily Rudd, joining Abrams, Brolin, Shue and Ortiz.
The premiere gave Hollywood a taste of the scale of this story. Now comes the real hook: watching a young man attempt to survive somewhere no diver ever wants to end up.

Whalefall opens exclusively in theaters October 16. Take a deep breath. Jay is going to need every one he can get.
