In 2014 Disney released Maleficent, a twisted take on the animated classic Sleeping Beauty. Angelina Jolie starred in the title role. The movie opened to mix reviews, but grossed over $750 million at the worldwide box office. We haven’t had much movement on the proposed sequel since…until now.
Disney has hired screenwriter Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Spectre) to rewrite the script. Butterworth most recently worked on the script for Disney’s other villain film in development Cruella.
Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice In Wonderland) will produce the film. With Angelina Jolie set to reprise her role as the classic Disney villain. Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King) wrote the original draft.
There is no timetable for release or a director attached to the film at this time!
