When it comes to Halloween, Disney fans look forward to watching Hocus Pocus. The 1993 family fantasy film which stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, and directed by High School Musical franchise helmer Kenny Ortega made $39M at the box office and ultimately became a cult classic on television. There have been on going rumors about a sequel for years, and the stars have all expressed interest in returning but unknown delays have stalled any possibility of a sequel. However we now have a new update.
Forbes Film Contributor Simon Thompson had the chance to speak with Hocus Pocus writer Mick Garris and asked him if he knew anything about a possible sequel.
Garris had this to say.
“There have been rumors of a Hocus Pocus sequel for the last 10 years that will not die. I have heard they are developing the script, I haven’t been involved in it but I think there will be a sequel it might be for Disney Channel or Freeform or ABC. I think it will be for television but I hear that it is moving ahead.”
Simon also asked if the original cast would be back and Garris’ response might get you excited if you were a fan of the original.
“I think they are, yeah, I think they are. If they don’t do that I think it would be a big mistake because all three of them are still so incredibly potent and powerful and great performers and who else can recreate those characters?“
It should be noted be that just because a script is being worked it doesn’t mean that Hocus Pocus is Greenlit or a for sure thing but Thompson’s interview with Garris is a great sign that Disney is still interested in returning to this story. Another great possibility is Disney adding Hocus Pocus 2 as an original movie for their upcoming streaming service in 2019.
