It’s been announced that James Gunn has been reinstated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and will return to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
According to Deadline, a deal was made months ago for him to come back and has been kept under wraps. Gunn will get back to work on the film as soon as he is finished with his work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. DC film universe, production on that film will begin in September.
Gunn was fired from the project this past July after offensive tweets he wrote years ago resurfaced, but according to insiders, Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn decided to give him a second chance because of how he handled the whole situation.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was expected to start filming in Atlanta last fall for an expected 2020 release date, but Marvel had never officially announced a specific date. Now it has been suspected that filming could begin as early as 2020 with a 2021 release. Gunn had finished writing the third installment. The first film raked more than $773 million worldwide and Vol. 2 grossed $863 million.
