Taika Waititi To Direct ‘Next Goal Wins’ For Fox Searchlight

Before Taika Waititi returns to Asgard in Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi has set his sights on a smaller project for Disney’s Fox Searchlight.

According to Deadline, Waititi will direct Next Goal Wins, based on the 2014 British soccer documentary from directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. Which debuted at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and would later win the British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary that year.

The documentary followed Dutch coach Thomas Rongen attempts the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners.

Waititi will be adapting the documentary along with Iain Morris while Garrett Basch will produce.
Imaginarium Productions’ Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish optioned the rights to the documentary in 2015, allowing Waititi to take on the project.

Production on the film is expected to begin this Fall and will wrap in time for his upcoming Marvel Studios film Thor: Love and Thunder, which is expected to begin production early next year in Australia.

Fox Searchlight is no stranger to working with Waititi, as the studio is set to release Jojo Rabbit which will hit theaters on October 18, in which the director also stars.
