‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Producer “Unsure” of Johnny Depp’s Role in The Next Film

Last week, the internet went ablaze when we shared the report that Disney was looking for a female lead in the next chapter of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Our report that you can read here details that the studio is maintaining the term reboot, and that Avengers: Endgame and Jumanji: The Next Level star Karen Gillan is a name being eyed for the role.

The big question fans have been wondering is, what does that mean for Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow? I personally have heard mixed things regarding Depp; however, Collider recently sat down with the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and it sounds like if Sparrow even has a role in the film, it may be a small role or cameo.

“The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be, so, we’re going to have to see.”

The script, which was worked on by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and previous pirates scribe Ted Elliot has already been finished, so if a producer is already saying he’s unsure where Sparrow could fit in yet, obviously means that it is not a leading role. Here is hoping we see Sparrow in a small role where he is passing the torch to the new lead, while still giving fans some closure.

A director search is ongoing for the film that is said to have a budget north of $100 million and is being made for a theatrical release, despite rumors of a Disney+ series.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one of the most financially successful of all time. The five films have grossed over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office. The last movie Dead Men Tell No Tales, ended up making $794.1M worldwide for the studio, dominating the Memorial Day weekend in 2017.
