Hamilton was the talk of social media through the holiday weekend, as the hit Broadway musical hit Disney+ on Friday. Now, according to Variety, the streamer saw a huge boost in downloads.
From Friday through Sunday, the Disney+ app was downloaded 513,323 worldwide, with 266,084 downloads from the U.S. alone. The analytics firm Apptopia received the numbers. The downloads were 72% higher than the average of the four weekends in June 2020 over comparable time periods (Friday through Sunday), per Apptopia data.
Worldwide, app downloads were 46.6% higher than average. (The global numbers do not include India or Japan, as Disney+ service is delivered through preexisting apps such as HotStar or Sky in those countries).
The question now remains, is will these new subscribers stay as Hamilton-hype begins to wear off? Disney+ recently cancelled their seven day free trial of the service, but hopes it’s upcoming content including The One and Only Ivan and season two of The Mandalorian will keep them on board.
