Tuesday morning had its share of surprises and snubs when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the nominees for its upcoming 94th annual awards show.
The Walt Disney Company emerged with 23 total nominations across all categories.
Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed West Side Story received 7 nominations alone, including nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Directing, and Cinematography.
Searchlight’s Nightmare Alley only managed to garner 4 nominations; however, one of those nominations is also for Best Picture.
Jessica Chastain’s performance and look in The Eyes of Tammy Faye also scored Searchlight nominations in both the Best Actress and Best Makeup and Hairstyling categories.
Searchlight’s Summer of Soul, directed by Questlove, also nabbed a nomination for Best Documentary.
Disney’s major animated releases – Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca, and Encanto – each scored nominations for Best Animated Feature, while the latter also received nominations for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
While everyone was rooting for Spider-Man: No Way Home to walk away with some big nominations, it only received a single nomination for its visual effects.
