Get A First Look At The Upcoming Disney+ Musical ‘Better Nate Than Ever’
Earlier today, Entertainment Weekly unveiled a first look at the upcoming Disney+ musical Better Nate Than Ever.
Based on the book of the same name by Tim Federle, the movie follows a young boy by the name of Nate Foster who loves theater but can’t even land a role in school’s play. When a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself, however, he sneaks off to New York City with his best friend to forge his own path to success.
Now, if Federle’s name looks familiar, it’s because he’s also the writer and executive producer for Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. After writing the novel over a decade ago, his life is coming full circle because in addition to being able to direct and produce the film adaptation for Disney it also features one of HSMTHTS‘ stars too!
Joshua Bassett, better known as Ricky on the popular Disney+ series, plays Nate’s older brother in the film, while newcomer Rueby Wood stars as Nate.
Whether you’re a fan of Broadway or not, though Federle insists that the film is everyone. In an exclusive interview with EW he said:
“Nate is very much a classic middle school protagonist who dreams of this big wide somewhere out there, and whether your dream is baseball or politics or being a chess player or whatever, a lot of us were that kid from a small town. This is for underdogs out there, anyone who feels like they’re the costar of someone else’s story, because we’re all the stars of our own life. And while the odds are crazy in show business and in New York and frankly just in staying sane as a normal human, somebody beats the odds every day and I hope the audience who watches this remembers that could be them too.”

Better Nate Than Ever also stars Aria Brooks, Lisa Kudrow, Michelle Federer, and Norbert Leo Butz and is produced by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel. Federle and Pamela Thur serve as executive producers.
You can check it out on Disney+ April 1st.
