All the way back in 2019, D23 Expo gave us our first look at the multi-year transformation coming to EPCOT. However, this initial look at the grand ideas Disney had for the park would not totally come to fruition. After many delays, cuts, and even a pandemic, the future of EPCOT’s main hub was a little uncertain until today. At a press event covering the continuation of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, Disney officially unveiled the revised plans for the park.
World Celebration Hub
If you decide to visit EPCOT right now, you may notice that most of the hub of the park is blocked off with construction walls. Once called Future World, World Celebration will be the gateway to the rest of the park and the home to EPCOT’s main quick service restaurant and store. The newly released concept art shows what will eventually be behind those walls with trees and other foliage taking center stage. In addition to a lot of green space, The World Celebration Hub will also be home to Dreamers Point where a new statue of the original dreamer, Walt Disney himself, will be placed.
In addition to the concept art provided by Disney, Scott Gustin provided an image of the layout of the new plans. You can see Dreamers Point will sit near Spaceship Earth with the rest of the hub’s foliage and seating area shown past it. The recently opened Connections Café and Eatery, home to EPCOT’s Starbucks location, as well as the Creations Shop sit to its right.
CommuniCore Plaza and Hall
The CommuniCore Plaza and Hall are the newly announced replacements to the festival center Disney originally announced at D23 2019. As EPCOT has leaned further into its many festivals, a proper building to host these events was definitely needed. However as the pandemic began, the raised festival center was one of the first projects on the chopping block. This replacement hall will house festivals such as Food and Wine and provide opportunities for event specific merchandise and food to be purchased. In addition, the CommuniCore Plaza can hold musical events for different festivals. Also in the CommuniCore Hall will be a place to meet your favorite Disney characters. Mickey & Friends is a permeate meet and greet location which replaces the EPCOT Character Spot.
Journey of Water Inspired by Moana
Located near The Seas with Nemo and Friends, Journey of Water is a walkthrough attraction inspired by Disney Animation’s Moana. The attraction will have many water features and play areas themed to the hit film. This concept art finally gives an idea of what this walkthrough will entail.
Although it might not be as grand as what was initially shown, the new ideas for World Celebration will do wonders when they open. In it’s current form, EPCOT is a dirt pit and these concept renderings give hope for the future of the park. With Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure opening last October, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opening later this month, EPCOT’s transformation is finally kicking into full gear just in time for the park’s 40th anniversary.
