Radio Silence in Talks to Direct 20th Century Studios ‘Escape From New York’ Reboot

Radio Silence, the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella, who directed Ready or Not and more recently the new Scream movie, are in talks to direct 20th Century Studios’ Escape From New York reboot.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Nothing is set in stone at this time but Radio Silence is working on getting this done with the Disney-owned studio.

Released in 1981, the original Escape From New York is set in the near-future world of 1997, and concerns a crime-ridden United States, which has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into the country’s sole maximum-security prison. Air Force One is hijacked by anti-government insurgents who deliberately crash it into the walled borough. Ex-soldier and current federal prisoner Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell)is given just 24 hours to go in and rescue the President of the United States, after which, if successful, he will be pardoned.

Despite rumors stating Russell is attached to return for the new movie, the horror site says Russell is NOT attached to the project. Though, the idea is for Russell to return in some capacity.

Escape From New York received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing more than $25.2 million at the box office. The film was nominated for four Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Direction. The film became a cult classic and was followed by a sequel, Escape from L.A.
