Director Shawn Levy Talks ‘Star Wars’ & ‘Deadpool 3’

While fans anxiously await the SAG-AFTRA strike to end to get updates on Deadpool 3, Variety caught up with director Shawn Levy to discuss his upcoming Netflix limited series All The Light We Cannot See and both Deadpool and Star Wars were brought up.

For those who may have missed the news a year ago, hot off Levy’s Free Guy and The Adam Project, the director was tapped to develop a new Star Wars movie. When asked how he plans to tackle the project differently than other Star Wars projects we have seen, he gave some insight and revealed what Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy said to him.

When Kathy Kennedy brought me on board to make a “Star Wars” movie, her central mandate to me was “I want a Shawn Levy movie. I want a story and a tone that reflects you and your taste and what you bring to your movies — with a ‘Star Wars’ story.” So I have felt extremely empowered. We are in early days, unfortunately, because the development process was abruptly paused [due to the WGA strike], but I feel very empowered to trust my instincts in the development of this story and movie.

Levy also revealed that his approach with Deadpool 3, is how he plans to approach his Star Wars movie.

The experience that I’m currently having with Marvel on “Deadpool” is showing me firsthand that it is indeed really possible to feel empowered and personal about making a movie within a universe that is bigger than any one film. My “Deadpool” movie is turning out to be exactly what Ryan [Reynolds] and I had hoped when we started off. So I’m going into the development of my “Star Wars” movie with a similar optimism, and faith that my instincts will be allowed to lead the way.

Deadpool 3, which sees the return of Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, was just moved off its May 3, 2023 release date due to the ongoing strikes. As of now, there is no official release date for the project but it is rumored that it could take the July 26 spot in a switch with Captain America: Brave New World.
