Yesterday, we received the big surprise announcement that Walt Disney animation Studios is releasing Moana 2 this year. While we weren’t sure if stars Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravahlo were coming back, today we have a better idea.

According to Deadline, both Johnson and Cravahlo are both in talks to return as the voices of Maui and Moana respectively. However, as of today, Johnson is much further in talks. Disney is hopeful and plans to get a deal done with Cravahlo, who has already said won’t be reprising the role in the live-action remake.

Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed the shocking announcement during yesterday‘s earnings call. The studio was blown away by the development on the Moana series that the series was reworked as a big screen sequel.

The sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. The only thing missing in Moana 2 Lin-Manuel Miranda, who isn’t returning to the project.

The Moana live action remake, is expected to move off its 2025 release date. Dwayne Johnson is returning as Maui for that project as well but production isn’t expected to kick off for another few months in Hawaii.
