According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, Autopia, a classic attraction found in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, is undergoing a transformation to become electric-powered.

“As the industry moves toward alternative fuel sources, we have developed a roadmap to electrify this attraction and are evaluating technology that will enable us to convert from gas engines in the next few years,” Jessica Good, a Disneyland Resort spokesperson, said in an email to the publication.

Disney has not provided confirmation regarding whether the cars will undergo a transformation into electric vehicles or hybrids, nor have they specified a timeline for the completion of the project.

The classic attraction, cherished by young visitors who revel in their first driving experiences, has been a part of Disneyland since its inception in 1955. Over the years, it underwent various changes, such as being renamed the Fantasyland Autopia and later the “Rescue Rangers Raceway,” reflecting the evolving themes of Disneyland. However, this marks the first instance where Disney has formally announced intentions to transition away from gas-powered vehicles.

The announcement about the upcoming changes to Autopia coincides with various other renovations and enhancements happening at “The Happiest Place on Earth.”

Walt Disney Imagineers are currently focused on the development of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, scheduled to debut sometime this year. Construction barriers surround the Haunted Mansion attraction, where crews are busy expanding the outdoor queue and establishing a Madame Leota-themed retail outlet. Additionally, Disney is in the process of revitalizing the entryway gates at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
