‘Bluey’ Season 3 Episode 48 Review: “Ghostbasket”- A New Beginning?

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for episode 48 of Bluey – Season 3.

Change is coming for the Heeler family, whether the grannies like it or not.

Today’s episode of Bluey sees dad Bandit pretending to be a realtor selling the Heeler home to mom Chili, who plays the prospective buyer. The girls (Bluey and Bingo) are once again playing geriatric Janet and Rita, the owners of the house who are determined not to move. But this is Bluey – a game is never just a game.

After the grannies convince the realtor to help them keep their house and successfully drive off the buyer, the camera pulls back to the front yard, where we see a For Sale sign in the Heelers’ front yard.

As next week’s mega episode (28 minutes long!) is entitled The Sign, it seems that the selling of the Heeler house will be the main focus of the episode.

At first, I was more upset than Janet and Rita about the Heelers leaving their iconic home. So many memories have been made in that place; it’s intrinsically tied to the Bluey brand. You wouldn’t take Bear out of The Big Blue House, or Mickey Mouse away from his Clubhouse, so why would Bluey leave her home? But after a conversation with a friend, I realized that’s the whole point.

Never before in a children’s show (in my memory), has the titular character left their home, never to return. But a childhood home is just that – a childhood home. Bluey has never shied away from the truth of reality, no matter how hard it is, or how much the girls want to hide from it. Leaving your childhood home is a pivotal point in growing up, so it makes sense that a show as grounded as Bluey would include this at some point.

The timing of this episode is what has me most intrigued though – Ghostbasket is the precursor to Bluey’s biggest episode yet, and the start to Part 4 of the season. Leaving the Heeler home behind will be the end of an era, but will it also spell the end of our adventures with this lovable pup and her family? Season 4 of Bluey has yet to be announced, leaving its future uncertain. It begs the question – when the door closes on the Heeler home for good, will another open in its place? Here’s hoping answers come in next week’s installment.

The forty-eighth episode of Bluey is now streaming on Disney+.
