Video games based on Disney properties played a significant part in making 2023 a fantastic year for gamers. Games like Disney’s Illusion Island and Aliens: Dark Descent complemented the triple-A blockbusters Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Several Disney-related games are scheduled for release throughout 2024, but none capture the imagination on the same scale as the newest addition to the Star Wars catalog. We are, of course, talking about Star Wars Outlaws.

Star Wars Outlaws will be released on August 30, 2024, meaning gamers only have four months to wait before they can experience what should be another huge hit. Renowned Swedish video game developer Massive Entertainment, the brains behind Tom Clancy’s The Division and The Division 2, is developing Star Wars Outlaws. At the same time, the company’s owners, Ubisoft, are tasked with publishing the title, all under license from Lucasfilm Games.

Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft have historically created incredible games that resonate with audiences far and wide. The combination of their know-how, Star Wars’ unwavering popularity, and a lack of AAA titles scheduled for a 2024 release could result in Star Wars Outlaws running away with the coveted Game of the Year award if they get things right. However, before you read the BetUS online sportsbook review and place a wager on Star Wars Outlaws receiving critical acclaim, it is worth noting that both Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft are keeping their cards close to their chest about what to expect from their latest venture.

What Do We Know About Star Wars Outlaws?

Star Wars Outlaws will be released on August 30, 2024, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (via Unibsoft Connect). However, those who preorder the Gold or Ultimate Editions will have early access from August 27. The current price for the standard edition is $70, while the Gold and Ultimate editions are over $100. This will be the first modern Star Wars title not available to previous-generation console owners.

The official story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws landed on YouTube on April 9. The trailer revealed Star Wars Outlaws is the first-ever open-world Star Wars game, set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Players take control of Kay Vess as she explores distinct planets across the Star Wars universe, setting foot on iconic and new planets. As an outlaw, you are tasked with taking on and outwitting the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you become one of the galaxy’s most wanted. As the official synopsis from Disney and Ubisoft states, If you’re willing to take the risk, the galaxy is full of opportunity.”

Although the entire cast is yet to be revealed, Ubisoft has leaked some information. First, Humberly Gonzalez of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora fame voices Kay Vess, while Dee Bradley Baker provides the voice acting for Vess’ axolotl-like companion, Nix. Jabba the Hutt has been confirmed as one of the iconic characters who will assign Vess missions from his palace in Tatooine, which makes sense because Jabba the Hutt is one of the galaxy’s most powerful gangsters. Players get to work for Jabba but can also betray him, which comes with consequences.

Locations and Planets

Star Wars Outlaws

Being an open-world title means Star Wars Outlaws players can embark on an epic adventure across the galaxy and step foot onto dozens, potentially hundreds of planets; Ubisoft is yet to confirm the official number of explorable planets. None of the planets are near-endless areas filled with procedurally generated content but rather the size of two to three zones in Ubisoft’s incredible Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Such a size seems ideal because it gives players ample opportunity to explore without exploration becoming repetitive.

The iconic Tatooine will feature heavily in Star Wars Outlaws, as it has in other Star Wars games. However, this time around, players get to visit the Mos Eisley Cantina. Other planets and moons from the movie franchise will be present and correct, with Massive Entertainment given creative license to build new worlds. Lucasfilm’s “80/20″ rule of design location is being enforced, meaning each location is 80% familiar and 20% alien or fantastical.”

How Long is Star Wars Outlaws?

Star Wars video game fans have voiced concerns about Ubisoft’s involvement in Star Wars Outlaws because of Ubisoft’s reputation for releasing games that are too big and drag on for too long; here’s looking at you: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. However, Uboisoft’s creative director, Julian Gerighty, calmed those fears while speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con in July.

“Our objective is to really get people into a very dense, rich adventure, open world adventure that they can explore at their own rhythm. So it is absolutely not a 200 or 300-hour unfinishable RPG. This is a very focused action-adventure RPG that will take people on a ride and is very manageable.”

The Wait Is Almost Over; Excitement Builds

The story launch trailer showed enough of Star Wars Outlaws to get fans of the franchise hot under the collar. From traversing familiar and new planets on foot or a speeder to action-packed third-person combat, the newest game from a galaxy far far away looks excellent fun.

Then, there is space combat, including initiating dogfights with TIE fighters and larger-scale battles. All this is before players even touch on the reputation systems and the RPG elements that enable Vess to upgrade her gear, improve her vehicles, and unlock powerful upgrades for her blaster.

Star Wars Outlaws is the franchise’s first open-world adventure game, which is enough to have gamers flocking in droves to buy it. However, the fact that gamers get to play as a baddie, albeit one who is not evil, is an even more significant first and a significant reason why Star Wars Outlaws has the potential to take the franchise in a whole new direction.

Star Wars Outlaws releases on August 30 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC.
