‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Update Revealed, Again

Over the past few years, the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been the subject of much speculation, with conflicting reports suggesting either a complete reboot with a new cast or a female-led film starring Margot Robbie. Recently, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has clarified the situation.

“It’s two different movies,” Bruckheimer says. The reboot has Jeff Nathanson doing the script with the Robbie-centric film being written by Christina Hodson, according to Entertainment Weekly, which caught up with the producer. “We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”

Let me throw this out there and let you all know none of this is new news unfortunately, except for maybe Nathanson writing the reboot, he is a Disney darling having written multiple projects for the studios including this month’s Young Woman and the Sea. Nathanson is working on the script, and Bruckheimer likes what he sees, at least the ending.“I think he’s cracked it. He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”

As of now, it is still unknown if Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow, but it is not looking like it at this point.  It was previously rumored that The Bear star Ayo Edibiri was circling a role in the franchise, but that has yet to be confirmed at this time. More recently, we hard Disney wanted Austin Butler for a role and Hailee Steinfeld was another name mentioned.

The franchise originated with the Pirates of the Caribbean theme ride attraction, which opened at Disneyland in 1967, the last Disney theme park attraction overseen by Walt Disney. The attraction can be found at four Disney theme parks. Since then, it has become a moneymaker, the five films have grossed over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office. The franchise has also become a revenue booster in video games, merchandise, and more.
