If you thought Marvel Animation cooked with X-Men ’97, then you have no idea the meal that awaits for you with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Set in an alternate timeline from all of the existing films and television shows, the series is a reimagined version of Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man complete with remixed versions of friends, foes and plot points.
Now, because the review embargo for the series hasn’t been lifted just yet, we can’t say much else about it. However, we can’t stop some of the creatives from talking about it…
This past week, our Editor-In-Chief Dempsey Pillot got the chance to speak to the series’ star Hudson Thames.
Funny enough, Thames is no stranger to the role. Having already voiced the character on Marvel’s multiversal series What If…?, he told The DisInsider that he was ecstatic to be recast in the role even though it was under totally different circumstances. He says that when first got the offer, he was actually driving and had to calm himself down so that he wouldn’t crash.
Thames did also say that he was nervous when he first got the news because, although it was a character he was familiar with, it was going to be a brand new story. But he found it relatively easy to get back into character because this story was more focused on Peter’s early life.
He says, he really had to “get under the hood and be like, Who is this guy? Who is this version of him? And honestly, the most of the character came from like, me going back and like, just reminiscing about what it’s like to be in high school and trying to get back into that place.”
Thames also discussed the pros of exploring the character in the most modern setting. “ I feel like it just does a really good job of dealing with, actual real things that are happening in 2025,” he says. “And I guess the real litmus test is gonna be, like, what my little brothers think.”
Additionally, in the interview Thames shared whether or not Tom Holland or any of the other Spider-Man actors have reached out to him, or given any advice. He also expressed what arc he’d like to see Peter Parker explore in a potential second season.
