After so many years, Disney is finally making a new series for Oswald The Lucky Rabbit.
According to Deadline, The project is an animation and live-action combination featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a cheeky and self-centered character. Jon Favreau is involved as both the writer and producer for this endeavor under Walt Disney Studios.
Oswald was created in 1927 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures. starred in several animated short films released to theaters from 1927 to 1938. Twenty-seven animated Oswald shorts were produced at the Walt Disney Studio. After Universal took control of Oswald’s character in 1928, Disney created a new character similar in appearance to Oswald as a replacement: Mickey Mouse, who went on to become the most famous cartoon character in the world.
Disney CEO Bob Iger was pivotal in bringing Oswald back to the Walt Disney Company. In 2006, The Walt Disney Company acquired the trademark of Oswald (with NBCUniversal effectively trading Oswald for the services of Al Michaels as play-by-play announcer on NBC Sunday Night Football).
As for Favreau, his Disney dominance continues. As the director of the 2016 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book, Favreau aimed to amalgamate the spirit of the original Jungle Book with the faithfulness and storytelling of Rudyard Kipling’s original tale. He used Kipling’s rendition of The Jungle Book as an opportunity to kick-start Neel Sethi’s career into stardom. He also directed the 2019 CGI film The Lion King, a remake of the 1994 animated film. He will direct the Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Favreau was named a Disney Legend in 2019 as an executive producer on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, in which he also voiced Paz Vizsla in the series. Additionally, he is an executive producer on The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
