21 Laps has hired screenwriter Tripper Clancy to write a reimagining of the popular Night at the Museum franchise for 20th Century Studios, Deadline has learned.
Though specifics about the plot are being kept under wraps, sources indicate that the movie will follow a brand-new narrative at the museum with a whole new cast of characters, as opposed to going back to the original trilogy’s beloved characters.
Shawn Levy, director of all three Night at the Museum movies, will produce the reimagining with Dan Levine for 21 Laps. Emily Morris will be supervising the project for the company.
The Night at the Museum series, which launched in 2006 and starred Ben Stiller, was a huge box office success for 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios), leading to two sequels and an animated Disney+ spinoff, Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again, in 2022.
Clancy, whose credits include Stuber, Die Hart, and Netflix’s FUBAR, has a talent for marrying comedy and action — a tone that would fit nicely into Museum’s world of fantasy.
