Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch has officially joined the billion dollar club at the box office.
Numerous cites reported that Lilo & Stitch has made $1.001 billion at box office with a grossed of $416.1 million domestically and internationally with $584.8 million.
Not only is Lilo & Stitch the 33rd Disney film to hit the billion dollar mark, it’s also the fifth Disney live-action remake of an animated classic and the first Hollywood movie of the year to do it.
The last Disney remake to hit a over billion at the box office was Jon Favreau’s The Lion King remake back in 2019.
This is a huge win for Lilo & Stitch since it’s one of Disney’s most popular franchise with Stitch being the biggest merchandise seller for the company with over $2.6 billion dollars in terms of retail sales since 2024.
With a budget of only $100 million, Lilo & Stitch is profitable and has already passed it’s breakeven point which was $205 million worldwide according to Deadline.
Lilo & Stitch has broke records for the Memorial Day weekend while opening opposite of Paramount’s Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning which grossed to $157.8 million domestically along with $184 million internationally, together grossing $341 million worldwide at the box office.
Now what can this possibly mean for Lilo & Stitch or Disney remakes in general?
It’s been recently announced that the remake will get a sequel which currently in development and Disney’s upcoming live-action Moana will be sailing to theaters next summer in July 10, 2026.
No word as of yet if the cast and crew will return for the sequel but there’s guarantee that newcomer Maia Kealoha who played Lilo will likely return along with Stitch voiced by Chris Sanders.
Lilo & Stitch, like its animated predecessor, tells the story of “the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers and the idea of the bond of family figure into the proceedings.”
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the film stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai, with original Lilo & Stitch writer-director Chris Sanders reprising his voice role as Stitch. It also stars Sydney Agudong, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, and Courtney B. Vance, with original cast members Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee also appearing.
