Disney is going all in on the Muppets.
Less than a month after Disney and the Jim Henson Company announced a revival of The Muppet Show with guest host Sabrina Carpenter, the studios are now developing its next big movie starring none other than Miss Piggy.
Jennifer Lawrence recently shared that she and Emma Stone are collaborating on a new film centered around the beloved Muppet character, with Oh, Mary! creator Cole Escola writing the screenplay. This project marks the character’s first standalone feature since Jim Henson introduced her on The Muppet Show back in 1976.
“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just going to,” she prefaced on Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’ Las Culturistas podcast. “Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.”
When asked if she and Stone will appear in the movie, Lawrence said, “I think so, we have to.” Lawrence did not reveal any plot details.
Since her debut in 1974, Miss Piggy (originally performed by Frank Oz, now Eric Jacobson) has been a celebrity fixture in international pop culture, with a distinguished career in film, television, fashion, recording, and publishing. She has been widely identified as a feminist icon.
