It’s been so long since The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement premiered that Mia Thermopolis could probably have grandkids by now—but don’t worry, The Princess Diaries 3 is still very much alive.
During a recent interview, Anne Hathaway offered fans a promising update on Disney’s long-awaited sequel, revealing that the project actually had to “start over” creatively. While that might sound like bad news, Hathaway explained that the reset led the team to the story they had been searching for all along.
“We had to start over,” Hathaway shared, adding that the creative breakthrough has everyone feeling much more confident about the direction of the film.
After years of rumors, false starts, and enough waiting to make even Queen Clarisse raise an eyebrow, the latest update is one of the strongest signs yet that fans may finally be heading back to Genovia. Disney previously announced that Adele Lim (Joy Ride, Crazy Rich Asians) is directing the third installment, with Hathaway expected to reprise her iconic role as Mia Thermopolis.
The original The Princess Diaries became an instant Disney classic when it debuted in 2001, introducing audiences to the awkward San Francisco teenager who suddenly learned she was royalty. The sequel followed in 2004, and ever since, fans have been patiently waiting…and waiting…and waiting some more.
While there’s still no official release date, Hathaway’s latest comments should reassure fans that the royal carriage hasn’t broken down—it just took a very, very scenic route to get here.
Here’s hoping the next announcement is less “we started over” and more “welcome back to Genovia.”
