During its final earnings call of the year, the Walt Disney Company revealed that growth for its secondary streaming service, Hulu, had grown by nearly 9 million.
Disney+ netted less subscribers – 3.1 million – but the company says its total number of subscriptions for Disney+ and Hulu were a combined 195.7 million. That’s an increase of 12.4 million from the previous quarter.
It attributes the growth to the streaming releases such as Lilo & Stitch and Alien: Earth. The news surprised many analysts who thought the streamer would see a major decrease in subscriptions following backlash to the company’s brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel LIVE, as well as a recent price hike.
Now, this will be the last time the company will share its subscriber data. Earlier this year, it revealed it would be following Netflix’s lead and keeping its numbers private.
It’s also the last year the two streaming services will remain separate. So next year will be a major test for the company to see whether the lack of transparency will fare with shareholders and if it can maintain its current momentum all in one app.
