The DisInsider Mailbag – Attractions, Announcements, and “Wait… That Was 5 Years Ago?”

Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner and Disney is expected to have some presence with multiple trailers. Until then, let’s hold you guys over with some mailbag questions. This week we discuss attraction inspired movies, a bunch of movies announced 5 years ago, and so much more.

Have you heard anything about Sister Act 3?

I have updated you guys on this project a few mailbags ago and sadly, there is no new updates as of yet. A script (which I hear, was really good) was turned in last Summer for review, but Disney has yet to give the project a green light.

Do you think Disney Animation/Pixar have a chance of winning the Oscar this year, or will KPop Demon Hunters continue to be undefeatable in the Animation category?

Despite both Elio and Zootopia 2 receiving positive critic and audience reviews, K-Pop Demon Hunters has become a worldwide phenomenon and the Academy recognizes that.

Is the Space Mountain movie still happening?

Disney has been trying to get this movie off the ground for a while now but just like the Big Thunder Mountain movie, it is on hold now and the focus is on Pirates of the Caribbean.

Is it true that Peyton Elizabeth Lee is in talks to play The Red Ranger?

No, Peyton is not “in talks” just someone the studio is interested in. What is true is that Rangers colors are not gender-specific so women can play the Red/Blue/Black Rangers or they could be Pink/Yellow Rangers. That is something that’ll get worked out after casting. We should hear names soon as the series is expected to begin filming in early April.

Any updates on the upcoming Zorro series?

I am pretty sure canceled the latest iteration if you’re referring to the one they were developing with Wilmer Valderrama.

What happened to the Three Men and a Baby remake with Zac Efron?

You can also add this one to its list of COVID-era project announcements that have been canceled.

What are some of your most anticipated movies this year?

1. Project Hail Mary
2. Ready or Not Here I Come
3. Avengers Doomsday
4. Shelter
5. Werwulf
6. Jumanji 4
7. Violent Night 2
8. Whalefall
9. Spider-Man: Brand New Day
10. Scary Movie 6

Is a live-action adaptation or a sequel to The Rescuers planned?

Wouldn’t that be neat? As of this time, nothing is planned.

Between Pocahontas and Anastasia, which one do you think is more likely to get a live-action adaptation?

Anastasia would be more likely. I think if Disney attempted Pocahontas, it would have to be drastically different than the animated film for obvious reasons (if you know the true history of Pocahontas). That said, neither is being considered at this time.

Wasn’t there supposed to be a Mary Poppins 3?

There were rumors but nothing was confirmed. Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca both said there were more stories to tell. There are more PL Travers books that could be adapted. Emily Blunt was reportedly open to returning if the right story came along (she never fully closed the door).

I know that this is not about a Disney movie or TV show, but do you know if Swamp Thing (a DC movie) has a tentative release date? And who would be the director?

James Mangold (Logan) is still attached, but he has so many projects in the works, and a script for Swamp Thing has not been turned in, so as of now, there is no release date.

Any updates on Hocus Pocus 3? Is it still happening?

They are working on it still; a new draft of the script is currently being written.

What happened with the Tower of Terror film that was announced with Scarlett Johansson?

It has been stuck in development he**, but unlike Space Mountain, Tower of Terror is still in the works with Scarlett Johansson still attached to star and produce but we likely won’t get any definitive news for quite some time as the former Avenger is busy with The Batman II and The Exorcist, not to mention she is expected to return for a new Jurassic World film.

Is the Figment film anywhere near starting production?

As far as I know, Disney canceled the idea of movie and is looking to turn this into some sort of Figment series. Whether or not it is animated or live-action, I am not entirely sure.

Will we ever see more projects from the world of Encanto or Wish?

I know Disney has ideas for a new Encanto project, which I believe was Disney+-related (series or shorts), whether or not we see it come to fruition I am not sure but I believe we will. As for Wish, I think Disney is done with that world and have no plans to develop any new content from it.

That’s all for this week’s mailbag. Stay tuned as every week, a new DisInsider Mailbag will drop.
