This week, we watched the two Toy Story specials that were released after Toy Story 3: Toy Story of Terror and Toy Story That Time Forgot.
Both of these specials were released on ABC on 2013 and 2014, respectively. They follow the adventures of the toys after the transition of ownership from Andy to Bonnie. With the original voice cast returning as well as top-notch animation, these are both enjoyable specials for fans of this franchise.
Toy Story of Terror is a Halloween themed special which brings the gang to a roadside motel after a flat tire. As Mr. Pricklepants provides hilarious narration to this “horror film”, everything that could go wrong, does go wrong. With echoes of movies such as Psycho, this is a clever and well written short. However, the plot point that involves adults selling toys is a little reminiscent of Toy Story 2.
Toy Story That Time Forgot aired the following year and takes place during Christmas time, though this is less of a holiday theme. In this special, Bonnie goes to visit her friend Mason, who has just gotten a brand new video game console. However, he has also gotten the coolest new dinosaur toys, which have been mostly ignored due to his obsession with his video games. When Bonnie’s toys meet the dinosaurs, they realize that these guys take their jobs as warriors a little too seriously. This one is not quite as much fun as Toy Story of Terror, but it still enjoyable and cleverly written.
Next week, we will be watching the remainder of the Cars Toons.
Happy watching!
