Now, that Aladdin is in theaters and looking to have a solid $80-$100 million opening. All eyes will be on Disney’s next remake, The Lion King. Now, thanks to a new report Disney could once again have another successful remake on their hands.
According to BoxOfficePro, the remake is long tracking to make $180-230 million which would surpass the openings of Disney’s other remakes Beauty and The Beast ($174.7 million) and Alice In Wonderland ($116.1 million), both films would go on to earn over a billion globally. With a prime Summer release, it is very likely The Lion King could receive the same financial success.
“The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, John Oliver as Zazu, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Eric Andre as Azizi, Florence Kasumba as Shenzi, Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari, JD McCrary as Young Simba and Shahadi Wright Joseph as Young Nala. Hans Zimmer is on board composing the film as he did the 1994 animated classic. Elton John and Tim Rice will also be returning, as they are set to collaborate with Beyoncé on a new song.
The Lion King will roar into theaters on July 19, 2019.
