Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ Passes $1 Billion Mark At Global Box Office

As of today, Disney’s live-action Aladdin has officially passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Though not really favored by film critics, the box office numbers prove that this movie is clearly making a lasting impact on audiences around the world. The animated classic was originally released in 1992.

In addition, this milestone also means that actor Will Smith and director Guy Ritchie are part of the billion-dollar club for the first time, not adjusted for inflation.

The summer tentpole crossed $1 billion today after finishing Thursday with a North American total of $343.1 million and $656.2 million overseas for a global haul of $999.3 million.

Aladdin first hit theaters over Memorial Day. Since then, its box office numbers kept rising which is much to Disney’s delight, who has been revamping its collection of animated movies and reimagining them into live-action films. Not only that, but this is now the third Disney release of the year to join the club after Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel, and the fifth Disney live-action movie to do after Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland and two of the Pirates of Caribbean installments.

The 2019 version of Aladdin is made up of an international cast that stars Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen and Numan Acar also star.

As mentioned already, Disney’s Aladdin has maintained a strong run in movie theaters across the globe. It stayed in the top seven for nine weeks in North America. Overseas, it has impressed audiences in Japan, earning nearly $100 million to date. In South Korea, it is the No. 4 Western title of all time with $81 million, while it is the highest-grossing movie of all time in the Middle East region.

When looking at the bigger picture, Aladdin is the 41st movie to cross $1 billion, and did so just one day after Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Far From Home achieved the same milestone.
