‘The Lion King’ To Become Disney’s Fourth Film In 2019 To Cross $1 Billion
This truly is the year of Disney, as they are completely dominating the box office. With Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Aladdin grossing over a billion dollars each, The Lion King will be the fourth movie for Disney to join the club.
The Lion King is sitting at $999.4M worldwide through Monday, and will cross a billion later today. The film accomplished this in only 19 days of release.
The film had the 9th highest-grossing opening ever at $185M and over $580M worldwide, the biggest opening for the month of July and a PG-rated film. The Lion King was also the second-highest-grossing opening of the year behind Avengers: Endgame, which this weekend passed Avatar as the biggest box-office blockbuster ever, As it has grossed over $2.790 billion worldwide.
Disney is having quite the year at the box office as the studio has grossed over $7 billion globally, thanks to Captain Marvel $1,128,258,330, Dumbo$351,795,003, Penguins $7,699,452, Toy Story 4 $919,105,081 and of course the aforementioned The Lion King, Avengers: Endgame, and Aladdin.
Still to come from the studio is Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Frozen 2, Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, as well as Disney upcoming streaming service Disney+, which is set launch this November.
