Fresh off the first season of Hulu’s critically acclaimed (and Emmy nominated) The Great, Elle Fanning has been cast as the lead in another series the streaming platform plans to produce.
Fanning will reportedly star as Michelle Carter, the young woman indicted in real life for the death of her boyfriend after she encouraged him to commit suicide via text message. The highly publicized case was considered controversial because of the debate it sparked about mental health and technology. Earlier this year, the story captured the nation’s attention again when Carter was released early from jail for good behavior.

The series, which will be called The Girl From Plainville, is expected to be limited and will explore the relationship between Carter and her boyfriend before his death.
Liz Hannah, most known for her work on Steven Spielberg’s The Post, will serve as a show-runner and co-produce the series alongside Patrick Macmanus. Fanning will also executively produce.
Considering the fact that Fanning’s The Great was just renewed for a second season, it is unknown when production on the series might start.
