A look at the Riordanverse on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2022

While working my 9-to-5, author/producer Rick Riordan told supporters that the Percy Jackson (reboot) series begins filming on June 1.

Rick In LA & Vancouver

“[A]ssuming all goes as planned, and Becky and I will be there from day one!” Riordan told readers of his must-not-miss blog. “Our meetings in LA concluded, we made an impromptu decision to pop up to Vancouver (because we were in the neighborhood, I guess?) to re-familiarize ourselves with the city where we will be spending this summer filming the TV show.”

Unlike many of you, this writer’s first exposure to the Riordan experience was with the Percy Jackson musical, “The Lightning Thief,” seen at Worcester’s Hanover Theatre.

I loved it and actually enjoyed the first film (to a point).

However, now, there’s a whole lot of folks who — like me — are jumping on the bandwagon.

And the excitement begins at the top.

Burbank Auditions

Riordan spoke about beginning his recent West Coast swing with a visit to (near) Hollywood.

“On Saturday [Feb. 19], we headed to the Disney Studios in Burbank for some in-person chemistry read auditions for Percy Jackson,” wrote Riordan. “This means we brought together different combinations of young actors we had identified as interesting candidates for the roles of Percy, Annabeth, and Grover and had them read through scenes together to see how they interacted. It was informative and exciting, and though we have come to no decisions yet, the process is moving along well.

“Seeing these actors taking on the roles in person made me appreciate once again just how talented and capable middle school kids can be when given a chance to shine… They were all amazing.”

Bobin in the Wild

Also amazing are two posts from director James Bobin (The Mysterious Benedict Society).

So, we have actors, stage spaces, and location scouting. Get excited, Camp Halfblood. Percy Jackson will be along soon.

New Look Books

Meanwhile, given the number of times I report on Mr. Riordan and the crew, I am doubling down on my research. So I was pleased to hear from Becky Riordan (@CampHalfBlood on Twitter), who mentioned a re-release of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series as outlined on ReadRiordan.com.

Check out the new covers!

Victo Ngai designed the new look covers, which will be available on May 3, 2022.
