Doctor Strange: Welcome to the WCU – The Wong Cinematic Universe

Benedict Wong talks about Wong, the new “Sorcerer Supreme,” during Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Red Carpet Event

Following a friendly welcome from the Marvel Cinematic Universe fans at the World Premiere, Benedict Wong spoke to the hosts about his character’s appearance in the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

“Welcome to the WCU – the Wong Cinematic Universe,” he laughed. “It’s still alive.

“He’s swinging in and out, hasn’t he?” added Mr. Wong. “Have portal, will travel.”

Now a staple MCU character, Wong (the actor and the character) was last seen in the MCU hanging out with Abomination in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

However, not much is known about the MCU’s “recently promoted” Wong, who is now the Sorcerer Supreme – a far cry from the wise but straightforward librarian of the first Doctor Strange film.

“There’s such a far greater responsibility that he has now,” explained Mr. Wong. “He now has a duty [to] his students, and he’s in quite a turmoil that he might have to turn his school into a fortress.

“So we’ll see.”

Opening this Week

We certainly will see, and very soon.

The official boilerplate reads:

Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” — a thrilling ride through the Multiverse with Doctor Strange, his trusted friend Wong and Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2022.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the film bridges the gamut of genres and is reported to employ horror elements, some of which were featured in the trailers.

Acting Among the Effects

But no matter the scene, it’s the actors who take center stage, and Benedict Wong explained how the visual and special effects and sets came together to help tell the story.

“It’s a great marriage actually, really, when you look at it,” said the actor.

“From [the] special effects of old, you know, the pyrotechnics, and then to the VFX team, you know… how effective it looks!”

Full of Consequences

But one thing still looks odd, as in the pairing of Wong and Doctor Strange.

“They’re still the odd couple, aren’t they really?” asked Wong rhetorically. “Wong the wisened one, and Strange the wayward one.

“Of course, [Wong] keeps telling him not to cast spells or tamper in natural law, and all these actions have consequences.

“And this film is full of consequences,” said Benedict.
